The History Behind Ordo

The history of Ordo dates back more than 40 years ago when the founder’s mother, Andrea Rosenblume, worked as a leader in child nutrition and education in the public school districts on Long Island. Andrea carried her belief in eating healthy back to their household, where she prepared delicious, homestyle meals from scratch for her family. Later, when the founder, Hunter Rosenblume, would eat lunch in different schools, he would always wonder why the cafeteria lunch was so different from what he ate at home.

Those experiences later inspired Hunter and then his co-founders, Sheila Nicolin and Lucas Kuzak, to start Ordo in Michigan, where they started serving better, fresh food in their first schools. In the last 5 years, Ordo has expanded from its home state to over 18 states and served hundreds of schools.

Our Focus on Fresh, Whole Food

As a company, we believe that fresh, healthy food should be available and affordable for every student. We don’t think ultra-processed foods should be a part of a growing child’s diet, much less what they eat everyday. All meals are prepared using whole ingredients and made from scratch, from the grilled chicken to the muffins.

No other food service management company ensures fresh food and ingredients in all of their menu items, resulting in much more nutritious, healthier meals for students. Fresh food is actually cheaper than manufactured food, despite what most people believe. A banana at Trader Joes costs the same in the 1980s as it does today. We procure ingredients almost entirely at a local level--that’s an important aspect of our business. Providing fresh food affordably is all about having labor available to support the preparation, and we manage that by bringing local chefs into our system and designing the procurement process, the menu, and everything else for fresh food.
